How do I draw on silk?
I've decided to learn silk painting, but I am not sure what to use to draw on the silk. Can someone help?
Hi there,
I've been painting on silk since 1980 and I absolutely love it 
If you learn silk painting in the Indonesian way, you will be able to draw on silk with hot wax using a specific tool called a tjanting.
If you use the ancient French or Chinese silk painting techniques, you will be able to draw using a product called 'gutta' - which is pronounced 'goota', and is a gum-based liquid product. It is poured into small squeeze bottles and applied with a fine nib.
These are the traditional techniques, but these days there are other newer products to draw on silk, like gutta pens, and special silk painting pens available from silk painting suppliers.
Sometimes I go back over some of my drawings with texta pens, or textile pens, to add extra detail.
